Task 6.4: Basic approaches to multimedia data representation.

The FERMI project fully conforms with the general ESPIRT BRA workprogramme objectives. Indeed, the project pursues a significant breakthrough in the performance of multimedia information retrieval systems by following an approach to the modelling of multimedia information retrieval which is scientific and interdisciplinary. It is scientific in that it is backed up by consolidated disciplines such as formal logic, probability theory, and computational complexity. It is interdisciplinary in that it brings together ideas from the Information Retrieval, Database, Artificial Intelligence and Multimedia areas.

In particular, the project complies with the specific aims of the priority theme 6.4, that is the theoretical aspects of the massive retrieval of multimedia data. Indeed, the project aims at the development of a retrieval model which embodies a formal theory of multimedia information retrieval and at the investigation of the scaleability and performance characteristics of this model as formal basis of very large multimedia information bases.
